I was determined NOT to have any New Year Resolutions for 2018.
I couldn’t think of any and I didn’t want to jump on the “I want to lose 10kg” bandwagon that everyone gets back off in February. Mostly though, it’s just that I don’t really believe in them.
But then I got to thinking. If I don’t want to make any New Year Resolutions, do I even have any goals for 2018? And if I don’t have goals, what’s the point? Will I just be left floundering around while everyone else achieves their dreams?
So I stopped.
I sat.
I dreamt.
And then I realised that everything I dream about doing and achieving, has been limited because, in all honesty, I’m a bit of a scaredy-cat. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE cats, but I don’t want to be a scared one. That’s when I realised that I actually DO have a New Year Resolution. This year I’m going to try to:
Be Brave!
So here are the steps I’m planning on taking to achieve my new goal, because we all know that a goal without a plan is just a dream ;)
Step 1. Say Yes More
When presented with an opportunity that is a bit scary, but deep down you want to give it a go, say YES! Even if it fails, at least you won’t regret that you didn’t even try.
Step 2. Say No More
I don’t mean say no just to be mean. More that when you’re already really busy, and someone is trying to reduce their own workload, it’s ok to say “Sorry, I can’t do those extra things for you, I’m busy too”. Or if someone invites you somewhere or to something that you’re really not interested in, just politely decline.
Step 3. Seek Out Opportunities
Don’t just wait for good things to land in your lap. Go and find them! They are out there if you look. And if you look, but can’t see any, just create them. What’s the worst thing that can happen if you approach someone? They might say “No”, but hey, you’re learning to say “No” too (See Step 2), so you really shouldn’t take it personally. (Well maybe for a couple of days, but then you have to just let it go and seek out something else!)
Step 4. Try New Things
Anything! New food, new outfits, new adventures. Brave people don’t get ‘stuck in a rut’.
Step 5. Be Happy With Being You
Brave people like themselves and they don’t care about other people’s opinions. Don’t shy away from all of the things above because you’re scared that someone might not like you because of it. It doesn’t matter what they think, it only matters what you think about yourself.
I’m going to do my best to use these steps to reach my 2018 Goal.
Did you make any New Year Resolutions? I’d love to hear about them in the comments
